Todd Gunson is a consultant dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, specialising in the assessment and treatment of all skin conditions. He has additional specialised training in Mohs micrographic surgery for the precise excision of skin cancer, and the subsequent reconstruction of the wound. He strives for the best individualised treatment plan for you, and believes the time taken to explain the condition and its treatment options, can be as important as the treatment itself. He will advise against surgery, or suggest a more conservative option, if this is in your best interests.
Todd also performs general skin and laser surgery for both skin cancer and non-cancerous conditions of the skin and nails. He offers skin assessment, and tailored practical advice on the prevention and treatment of precancerous sun damage, and early or superficial skin cancer including non-surgical options. He covers medical dermatology and has a special interest in acne, acne scarring, nail disease and nail surgery. Todd completed his basic medical training at the University of Auckland School of Medicine. A number of years working in both internal medicine and sub-speciality medicine culminated in fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. His specialist dermatology training was completed in Auckland and the United Kingdom. He then undertook anAmerican College of Mohs Surgery(ACMS) fellowship at Oxford Day Surgery in Perth, Western Australia. He was also awarded fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD). He is the only Mohs surgeon accredited by the ACD, and one of only four ACMS fellows, in Auckland. His experience in Mohs surgery spans more than 3200 cases. He is a fellow of the New Zealand Dermatological Society (NZDS).
He worked in private and public dermatology practice in Australia prior to returning to New Zealand in January 2012.
His private practice is based at Auckland Skin & Cancer Foundationin Remuera. He also offers consultations at the East Care Specialist Centre in Botany. Todd heads the Mohs surgery service for the Auckland District Health Board, based at the Department of Dermatology within the Greenlane Clinical Centre. He is a First Choice Provider to nib Health Insurance, and an affiliated provider to Southern Cross Health Society.
Todd is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Auckland. He has presented and published numerous medical papers and has wide experience in clinical teaching. He is a reviewer for an international peer-reviewed dermatology medical journal. His current active research interest is in the prediction and prevention of surgical site infection, with the aim of improving patient outcomes while minimising oral antibiotic use. His work in this area has culminated in an Australian Government Clinical Excellence Award, and one of his publications being listed in the NEJM Top 10 International Dermatology Journal Articles of 2014. He is also honoured to have his research incorporated into the 2016 WHO global guidelines for the prevention of surgical site infection. He also has a special interest in the use of a range of established intra-operative and post-operative techniques aimed at minimising surgical scars. He also utilises a number of specific techniques to improve the delivery of local anaesthetic, minimising discomfort.
